'feathers' for cc-tapis
"Maarten De Ceulaer has always had an affinity for birds. Years ago, he came across the works of John James Audubon and John Gould and ever since has regularly used these illustrations as a source of inspiration.
To create each image, De Ceulaer scans, digitally isolates and combines various birds together, often tweaking and morphing them into further abstraction. Shapes, colors, and textures are rearranged in enchanting and absorbing compositions. The collages are then translated into rich and sophisticated rugs, hand-knotted in Himalayan wool and silk. By varying the pile-height a sense of depth is added, emphasizing the feathers’ shapes."

'Stained Glass Floor Light'at doppia firma
"Maarten’s first encounter with full-size handmade mouth-blown glass panels was during his first studio visit to Atelier Mestdagh, one of the most renowned glass studios’ in Belgium, with whom he developed this project. He immediately fell in love with their skilled craftsmanship, and the depth of the colors, the textures, air bubbles, patterns and drawings in the multi-colored sheets.
It is rare to see this type of glass in big surfaces, as stained-glass studios tend to cut it up into hundreds of small pieces to reassemble it in multicolored stained-glass windows or Tiffany-like lamps. Therefore, Maarten decided to do the opposite, by creating a project that honors this material and lets it speak for itself. A floor light, man-sized and with generous proportions, felt most suitable for this purpose, so one can fully feel the material and its presence. A recognizable yet iconic shape an object that everyone can relate to.
The glass panels are used in large color blocks, and in consecutive order, to highlight the beautiful patterns, drawings and textures inherent in the glass. Traditional lead work is used to frame the glass, and an inner steel structure creates a strong support."

Between Art And Design' at Kanal Pompidou Brussels
12/09/2018 — 04/11/2018
This exhibition includes objects in a specific niche in a sector as wide as design, that of ‘collectible design’ or ‘design art’, situated in the grey zone between art and design. Limited series and unique pieces, mainly or exclusively hand-made, form the core of this exhibition, in which unconventional and often monumental form takes precedence over functionality.
This exhibition highlights the importance of the questions that Belgian designers have around the choice of form and function in designs. The tension between these two fundamental aspects of design was a key element in the selection of the items for the show. This tension also comes up in the research into and experiments in the techniques and materials used. The result is always a very personal design language that invite interaction. The objects may surprise, make us think about, move us, disturb or mislead, or even amuse.
Between Art & Design, The Belgian scene offers us an ensemble that reflects the wealth and particularly the diversity of contemporary Belgian design. In this selection, the most striking aspect is the great artistic diversity that is also a strong characteristic of the world of visual arts in Belgium. The designers are acting as very independent and individual and they have developed their own ideas about the day-to-day environment and the interiorobject.
Belgian designers remain, with a few exceptions, understated; their work is rarely obtrusive but truly characterised by a feeling for aesthetics, volume and proportion. And even that is their strength.
