Maarten initially conceived the 'Transformations' concept for Fendi's Design Perfomance at Design Miami 2012. The idea was inspired by the company's long heritage of abstract rectilinear and geometric imagery. The designer decided to take these 2-dimensional patterns into the 3th dimension, and to create a system based on “soft planks” that can be applied wherever additional comfort is desired. Like moss in a forest they can overgrow almost anything, and the gesture of applying them is as simple as nailing a board to a tree.

The Transformations Oak Beam Benches are conceived as a puzzle game. One giant oak beam was cut into pieces of 40x40x40, 80x40x40 120x40x40 and so on, with which it is possible to create a wide range of seating, from a large sitting area to a small chair; the designs you see here are all based on the same oak beam pieces.
