Maarten initially conceived the 'Transformations' concept for Fendi's Design Perfomance at Design Miami 2012. The idea was inspired by the company's long heritage of abstract rectilinear and geometric imagery. The designer decided to take these 2-dimensional patterns into the 3th dimension, and to create a system based on “soft planks” that can be applied wherever additional comfort is desired. Like moss in a forest they can overgrow almost anything, and the gesture of applying them is as simple as nailing a board to a tree.
These pieces consist of antique benches that the designer collects on flea markets and in antique stores, which he transforms into something completely unique and timeless with his colorful handmade leather cushions. The work pays hommage to the anonymous craftsmen that made the benches, and makes an interesting statement. In these days, where everything seems already designed, is it really necessary to come up with the next sofa, chair or bench? Or could we just transform what is already there?
